Testing Chicken Soup: A Font for Authentic Brand Stories

I had a blank brand board open, a new client brief, and a coffee that was still too hot to drink. The project was a visual identity for a small, local candle maker. Their core idea was ‘handcrafted warmth,’ and they wanted something that felt personal, approachable, and a little bit magical. My usual sans-serif and serif pairings felt too sterile for the mood they described. I needed a typeface that could whisper that handmade story from the very first glance. That’s when I decided to test Chicken Soup.

The First Impression: Quirky Charm on a Logo Draft

I typed the potential business name into a logo mockup. Immediately, the font’s personality filled the space. Chicken Soup is undeniably cute and charming, with that handwritten quality that feels genuine, not overly polished. Its whimsical nature comes through in the slightly irregular baseline and the playful letterforms—the lowercase ‘g’ has a delightful little tail, the ‘o’ is perfectly round but not rigid. It’s quirky, but not chaotic. There’s a consistency in its irregularity that makes it feel designed, not just scribbled.

For this candle brand, it clicked. The font visually echoed the hand-dipped, hand-labeled process of the products. It didn’t scream ‘luxury’; it whispered ‘careful craftsmanship.’ That first test on a simple black-and-white logo draft told me this font could carry emotional weight.

Building a Brand System with a Handwritten Heart

Once the core logo felt right, I began expanding the system. Chicken Soup naturally became the primary display font for all headline-level communications. On packaging mockups, I used it for the main product name on the label. The quirky charm translated beautifully onto a physical object—it looked like someone had lovingly written the name directly onto the jar. On the website hero section, the same font in the headline immediately set a warm, inviting tone, distinct from the colder, more corporate aesthetics common online.

Its use, however, is best in short bursts. As a display font, it excels. I wouldn’t set long paragraphs of body text with it; readability for extended reading would suffer. Instead, I paired it with a simple, clean sans-serif for all supporting text—paragraphs on the website, ingredient lists on packaging, the longer story on the ‘About Us’ page. This created a clear visual hierarchy: the charming, handwritten Chicken Soup for the key brand moments, and a legible, neutral typeface for the practical information. The contrast made both elements stronger.

Practical Observations from Mockups to Materials

Testing a font in real contexts is crucial. Here’s what I observed:

The font’s PUA encoding was a quiet hero in this process. Having access to all the glyphs and alternates meant I could tweak certain letter combinations for the logo to ensure the best visual flow, or choose a more playful alternate character for a special promotional poster. This level of control within a handwritten-style font is invaluable for brand consistency; you can maintain the quirky feel while ensuring specific words look exactly as you need them to.

Setting the Mood and Perception

The choice of a primary typeface fundamentally shapes brand perception. Using Chicken Soup anchored the entire brand identity in a mood of authenticity, creativity, and warmth. It moved the brand away from generic ‘premium’ aesthetics toward something more narrative-driven. For audiences seeking a personal connection with a small business—whether it’s a café, a boutique, a creative studio, or a product-based brand like this candle maker—this font acts as a visual handshake. It says, “We’re human, we care about details, and we have a story.”

That doesn’t mean it sacrifices professionalism. The font is well-crafted and consistent enough to feel intentional, not haphazard. When placed within a considered design system with clean layouts and thoughtful supporting elements, it elevates the entire presentation. The professionalism comes from the holistic design, with the font providing the unique, memorable soul.

Where Chicken Soup Fits in Your Toolkit

Based on this project, I see Chicken Soup as a fantastic accent or primary display font for brands that need to express:

Its application is broad within that scope. Think logo design, product labels, packaging headers, website hero text, poster headlines, social media graphic accents, and short editorial titles. It’s a font that brightens up a design, as its description promises, by injecting a dose of personality.

For client work, my advice is to test it early. Place it on the actual mockups you’re creating—the packaging, the website header, the business card. See how it interacts with your color palette, your imagery, and your supporting typeface. A font like this can be the make-or-break element for a brand aiming for a specific emotional resonance. Pairing is key; it needs the stability of a neutral serif or sans-serif to balance its playful energy. I found a classic geometric sans-serif worked perfectly, providing a clean foundation for the handwritten charm to shine.

Ultimately, fonts are tools for telling stories. Chicken Soup, as a cute and charming handwritten font, is a tool for telling stories that feel close to the heart, crafted by hand, and full of character. It turned a blank brand board into a coherent, inviting world for that small candle brand. For any designer working on a project that requires a touch of genuine whimsy and a lot of authentic charm, it’s a typeface worth having in your library.
